University of Toledo President Lloyd A. Jacobs, M.D., is leading a vigorous process ofgrowthandtransformationtoestablisha new vision, a new identity and a new level of educational qualityandexcellenceat the University.

President Jacobs began his appoint-ment as the University’s 16th president in July 2006, when the former Medical University of Ohio, which he headed for approximately threeyears, andUTmerged. Itwasperhaps themost signifcant event in highereducationinOhiointhe last50years, and he was selected to lead the merged universities.

ThestrategicplanapprovedbytheBoardofTrustees inApril 2007,“Directions,”articulatesUT’smission, vision and set of institutional core values and sets out goals to be met in order to establish University of Toledo as one of the great public metropolitan research universities in the world.

Underhis leadership, theUniversity,whichoperates three campuses and has an annual operating budget of more than $800 million, has enjoyed tremendous momentum, experiencing enrollment growth in the last three years to nearly 23,000 students.

President Jacobs has worked to strengthen under-graduate education, graduate and professional educa-tion and scholarship, research, and service across UT’s

14 professional colleges; to make the University more, afordable, accessible, sustainable and student-centered; and to encourageexplorationhowUTcancreate collaborative programs and synergies involving the arts, humanities, science, technology and other felds.

The University has recruited a diverse student body and faculty, strengthened patient-careprograms atUTMedical Cen-ter, focusedonimprovingthe learningand living environments on and near campus and earned several key institutional ac-creditations.Hehas further integratedthe University’s intercollegiate athletic pro-grams into campus life, established a stronger relation-ship for clinical educationand researchwithProMedica, and entered into research and educational agreements with universities in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Cranes have pierced UT’s skyline during his admin-istration as the University has invested more than $200 milliontoconstructnewbuildingsandtorenovateexist-ingacademicbuildings, classroomsandathleticvenues. Particularly noteworthy are the $30 million renovation of Savage Arena, the $27 million facelift of Memorial FieldHouse into faculty ofces and classrooms, the new Orthopedic Center on Health Science Campus and the soon-to-be-completedSavageandAssociatesComplex for Business Learning and Engagement and UTMedical
