Academics and Football

Incoming student-athletes learn quickly that academics are a ma-jor priority at the University of Toledo. Head Coach Matt Campbell and his staf demand maximum efort from all the young men in their program. Football players are required to sit in the frst two rows of all their classes, and must introduce themselves to all their instructors within the frst two weeks of the semester. Missing class or being late for class is not tolerated. Volunteer “encouragers” are on call to moni-tor compliance to all academic rules of the football program.

Toledo Football Sets Record for APR

The most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) fgures released by the NCAA shows that the University of Toledo football program earned a score of 960 for the four-year period from 2007-08 through 2010-11. It is the highest mark ever for the Rocket football team and the third consecutive year that UT has been above the NCAA’s established “cut point” of 925.

In addition, the Rockets’ one-year APR score for 2010-11 was 973, the highest in school history. Football has now moved its cumulative APR from 892 to 960 in the past four years, a leap of 68 points.

APR is a gauge of every team’s academic performance at a given point in time. Points are award-ed on a semester-by-semester basis for eligibility, retention and graduation of scholarship student-athletes. “1000” is considered a perfect score. Sports that fail to reach the 925 “cut point” can be penalized with the loss of scholarships. The most recent APR data is a cumulative fgure taken from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years.

Rockets Earn 2.9 Team GPA in Spring 2012

The Rockets’ teamGPA for the Spring 2012 semester was a 2.9. For players returning to the team this fall, their overall GPA was 3.025.
